The Nude Party
The Nude Party
The Nude Party congealed as one unit in the southern mountain town of Boone, NC in 2013 and gained their namesake very literally. Bonded by isolation, house party debauchery, a religion based on pushing the limits of bad taste, and a precocious predisposition towards the Kinks, the Animals and the Velvets, they have burgeoned into a rock and roll act to be reckoned with. As the hysteria at their local shows steadily increases, so does their reputation with local law enforcement, forcing them daily more to seek employment anywhere but home. While snooping cops seeking to stamp out indiscriminate behavior scour the borders of their homestead the Nude Ranch, the group has prodigally exiled themselves and are staying scarce with a string of self booked tours and one night stands which have linked them up with with such likes as The Growlers, The Oblivians, La Luz, Night Beats, and King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard.

Their stripped down and bare bone sound, akin to the British Invasion being transplanted back into the Carolina mountains, has so far proven to have been unrecordable... until now. The secret? Sticking to the obvious and going down into a sweaty basement with a few mics, fewer clothes and a revolving door of comrades and goddesses falling by for as long as they can take the heat. Lately the Nudes have even gotten good at playing with their clothes on. However if any audience member feels the need to participate in the spirit of exhibitionism the stakes at the Party will unblinkingly be called and raised.

“WE HAD TO BECOME A NEW BAND,” SAYS JOE KILLIAN, DRUMMER OF PHILADELPHIA FOURSOME COLD FRONTS. THE PROCESS BY WHICH THE GARAGE ROCK OUTFIT EVOLVED SINCE THEIR 2015 ALBUM FOREVER WHATEVER WAS AN ACTIVE MEDITATION IN COLLABORATION, KINSHIP, AND REFLECTION. WITH THEIR SOPHOMORE FULL-LENGTH FANTASY DU JOUR, OUT APRIL 20 ON SIRE RECORDS, THE BAND – CRAIG ALMQUIST (VOCALS/GUITAR), MAX STEEN (GUITAR), ALEX LUQUET (BASS) AND KILLIAN – STRIKE A BALANCE BETWEEN VULNERABILITY AND RAMBUNCTIOUSNESS, REFLECTION AND DECLARATION.

OVER THE ALBUM’S 13 TRACKS, ALMQUIST’S GRITTY CROON SNEAKS SNARK INTO SURGES OF GUITAR, ALL AT ONCE INTRICATE – LACED WITH SHOEGAZE AND SURF ROCK TOUCHTONES – AND URGENT – RIFE WITH BOMBASTIC RIFFS AND CRUNCHY POWER CHORDS. ALBUM OPENER “THIS ALWAYS HAPPENS” SERVES AS A RALLYING CRY FOR THE ROMANTICALLY DISILLUSIONED – “YOU NEVER LISTEN TO ANYTHING OR ANYONE / YOU’RE NOT THE ONE,” ALMQUIST SEARS – WHILE THE JIVEY TITLE TRACK ADDS A LAYER OF VULNERABILITY AND ROMANCE TO A COLLECTION OF SONGS THAT DANCES AROUND THE NOTION OF CONTROLLED ANARCHY.

RECORDED OVER THE COURSE OF THREE WEEKS IN EARLY 2017 IN NEW YORK CITY, FANTASY DU JOUR MARKS THE FIRST TIME THE BAND IN ITS CURRENT ITERATION FULLY COLLABORATED ON A BODY OF WORK. THE QUARTET UTILIZED THE THREE YEARS BETWEEN FOREVER WHATEVER AND FANTASY TO HONE THEIR SOUND AS A UNIT THROUGH EXTENSIVE TOURING AND SUBSEQUENT GROUP WRITING SESSIONS WHICH BEGAN WHEN PRIMARY SONGWRITER ALMQUIST LINKED WITH STEEN WHO PLAYED A MAJOR ROLE IN THE CREATION OF THE SONGS ON FANTASY, INCLUDING ITS NAMESAKE TRACK.

“MAX WROTE THE MUSIC FOR IT,” ALMQUIST SAYS OF “FANTASY DU JOUR.” “HE WAS STAYING AT MY HOUSE THAT WEEK AND HE PLAYED IT AND I WAS LIKE ‘DID YOU JUST PUT THIS TOGETHER IN FIVE MINUTES WHILE I WAS TEXTING ON MY BED?” AND HE GOES ‘YUP,’ AND STARTS SINGING ‘NOBODY WANTS TO DANCE WITH ME.’”

ON THE OPPOSITE END OF THE SPECTRUM, “STAYING IN,” A BOISTEROUS QUIP ABOUT SMOKING WEED AND GETTING DELIVERY, WAS THE PRODUCT OF THE ENTIRE GROUP, PAIRING THE CENTRAL VISION OF A LAZY NIGHT WITH SPLASHY HI-HAT AND SLUDGY BASS.

ALMQUIST’S LYRICS BOTH PLAINLY DEPICT THE LIFE OF A 20-SOMETHING MAN WHO ORDERS TAKEOUT AND THE EXTERNAL CRISIS OF A WORLD ON THE BRINK OF SELF-DESTRUCTION; THE INTERNAL RECKONING OF DESIRE AND THE JUSTIFICATION OF THOSE FEELINGS. THROUGHOUT IT ALL, THE RUNNING IDEA OF RIGHT PLACE, WRONG TIME RINGS TRUE, THAT LOVE MAY BE PURE, BUT IT DOESN’T EXIST IN A PETRI DISH.

“A GENERAL THEME OF THE RECORD WAS LOVE IN 2017 POST-TINDER, POST-TRUMP, THIS DEPRESSING WORLD OF MODERN ROMANCE,” ALMQUIST SAYS. “THIS FANTASY OF ‘THE ONE’ AND I THINK THE IDEA OF ‘THE ONE’ BEING OUT THERE WITH SOMEONE ELSE.”

FANTASY DU JOUR EXTRAPOLATES THAT WE ARE ALL PASSING SHIPS IN THE NIGHT, BUT THAT VOYAGE SHOULD STILL BE JOYFUL, MESSY, COMPLICATED, WROUGHT WITH GUITARS.

“PEOPLE HAVE BEEN MAKING GUITAR MUSIC FOREVER AND I HOPE WE CAN STAND OUT AMONGST OTHER BANDS THAT HAVE THE SAME VOX GUITAR AMPS AND THE SAME PEDALS,” ALMQUIST SAYS. “I HOPE OUR SONGS STAND OUT.”
